G E T T I N G T O G R E E C E
The group will meet at the Athens airport in Greece at 12 noon for transfer to our hotel in Athens. Although airfare is NOT included we will gladly help with making your flight arrangements. Also we can help you with any pre or post tour arrangements in Greece and beyond. If you will be traveling from a long distance away such as the west coast of US or Canada, or from Austrailia or New Zealand arriving a couple of days early is recommended.
T O U R
The tour price includes private tours by our favorite official Greek tourist board guides of Knossos archaeological site, the Heraklion Museum and the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum, the Ancient Agora, the Plaka area and a walking tour of Chania. Other tours are optional and can be prearranged for you by the tour director. Optional activities include Greek cooking classes, scuba diving, boat excursions, hiking, wine tasting, and/or exploring more of Greece's ancient past and history, etc. You can choose activities to fill everday or you can just relax and enjoy the beaches and the local atmosphere. Even if you choose not to partake in additional tours your Wanderwoman tour director will provide insights into Greek history and culture.
The tour is escorted by Erja Lipponen, Founder/Owner of Eurynome Journeys, who will attend to details to assure you a hassle-free vacation. Erja has traveled to Greece numerous times over the past 26 years, both leading groups and alone, and is looking forward to sharing some of her favorite places in Greece with you and discovering new favorites. On days that are "at leisure," Erja will be available to arrange activities, recommend restaurants, and lead optional hikes/walks. On all days a meeting time will be set of those wishing to get together for dinner. Visit our "About Us" page to learn more about our small group tours and about Erja.
H O T E L S
Wherever possible, Erja has selected smaller quaint hotels and inns with local ambiance, rather than typical "package tour " hotels. Each hotel is within walking distance to restaurants, shops, and points of interest - givng you freedom to explore right out the door! The accommodations are simple but comfortable. Each room is different, but all rooms have private baths, direct dial telephones, and TVs. Some of the hotels do not have elevators (but have lots of stairs), so be prepared to carry what you pack. Backpack style or small-wheeled suit cases are recommended since some segments will be traveled by ferry. In Athens and Heraklion the group will stay at larger hotels that have been chosen for their locations and amenities (roof-top pools, etc).

Read about the Wall frescos of Thira
The discovery of the wall-paintings of Akrotiri , Thera, in the excavations (1967-1974) of Professor Spyridon Marinatos is of outstanding importance for our knowledge of the early Aegean world. It ranks alongside Schliemann's opening of the Shaft Graves of Mycenae in 1876 and Evan's uncovering of the Palace of Knossos with its collections of inscribed tablets in 1900.
The THERA FOUNDATION, a non-profit organization that was created in 1969, by Mr. Peter M. Nomikos, maintains an exhibit of these beautiful frescos. The foundation's purpose is to promote the study of archaeology, geology, art history and other cultural events as they pertain to Greece and Santorini in the context of the Mediterranean. Learn more about the frescoes and The Thera Foundation by visiting: www.therafoundation.org.
